What is the purpose of casing pipe?

A casing pipe is a hollow tube. Through the casing pipe or encasement pipe, the main pipe or the carrier pipe runs. The casing insulators provide support between the carrier pipe and casing. Any pipeline whether gas or oil is not directly put under the surface of the land without the casing pipe. The casing pipe is placed using a hydraulic/pneumatic jack and then the main pipe is inserted into the casing pipe. The purpose of the casing pipe is to create a bore. In order to prevent electrical shorts between the main (carrier) pipe and casing pipe, the casing insulators or casing spacers are used. The joints of the casing pipes are sealed with a link seal and the ends with an end seal.

Following are the reasons behind using a casing pipe:

  1. Provides stability - The carrier pipe should not burst or collapse. Casing pipe provides stability and helps keep the carrier pipe from caving in on itself.

  2. Prevents contamination - The casing helps to protect the carrier pipe from getting contaminated from the water or soil outside.

  3. Prevents corrosion - Steel is used to make casting pipes to avoid corrosion of the carrier pipe. They offer double protection.

  4. Controls pressure - The carrier pipe must withhold the pressure of the penetration of the carrier pipe and the material running through them. The carrier pipe manages the load put on the carrier pipe when oil or gas is transported through them.

The casing can go wrong in many ways. Pipeline rehabilitation is not only essential for carrier pipes but also for the casing pipes. The casing pipes hold the carrier pipe and are directly in contact with external materials. Casing pipes can get corrosion or leaks due to wear and tear. If the casing is not designed as per the capacity and as per load it may break.  Similarly while storing or transporting the casing pipe, precautions should be taken. Damage during handling can be avoided with proper handling of the casing pipe and regular checks. Timely pipeline rehabilitation is required to ensure the casing pipes are strong enough to protect the carrier pipe. The casing pipes and the casing insulators should be tested regularly.
